In the wake of the blackout, several fires were caused by people using candles and combustible light sources. We also had decorative oil lamps that we used - but we found them to be a bit smoky, and our toddler was VERY interested in getting ahold of them. But they're uncomfortable (and uncomfortably bright) tucked into the crook of the neck for reading. Flashlights are great for what they were made for - a light source to be carried around. In the '03 blackout, we had plenty of flashlights, but once we were home and it started to get dark, what we wanted was area lighting.
